Author Gail P. Kahn provides a compelling picture book where children and adults alike get to learn more about elephants while being enthralled with an impressive, heartwarming story.

Author and veteran educator Ryke Leigh Douglas, who goes by the pen name Gail P. Kahn, brings an outstanding picture book to the global stage with “The Tale of Tumeleng,” which revolves around a young elephant named Tumeleng growing up in Africa.

While the elephant is a commonly portrayed creature in children’s books, Tumeleng takes it to the next level by providing readers an exceptionally appealing character while at the same time preserving her animal nature.

The story starts with Jabari, a male elephant, who takes the lead in defending the herd from hyenas. When Tumeleng, Jabari’s daughter, is born, she aims to keep up with the herd as they move to a new waterhole.

As Tumeleng grows and learns how to survive in a world filled with danger and environmental challenges, the reader discovers these majestic sociable animals are not just the biggest animals in the world.

“The storyline brings to light evidence of their high level of intelligence, their human-like qualities, and behaviors, which include their strong sense of responsibility for their young, their respect, concern, and compassion for one another and their efforts to maintain harmony in the herd,” says Douglas.

One of the reviews on Amazon applauded it for flawlessly capturing the spirit of elephants: that though these animals are enormous and powerful, they have that great sense of respect, fondness, and love for one another. They travel in herds to find food and water yet always share with one another.

Douglas is a veteran educator devoted to helping children discover the joy of reading and the magic of books. She holds an M.A. as a reading specialist from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.

Douglas strives to provide parents and teachers with entertaining stories that lend themselves to nurturing positive attitudes, good character traits, and creative thinking.

When she isn’t writing, Douglas enjoys visiting schools, museums, libraries, and early learning centers to share her stories and encourage children to develop their own writing skills with a program she developed entitled The Writer’s Tool Box.

Another book review commended the book for creating a “great children masterpiece with an important message for all ages.

“I believe every single child will fall in love with Tumeleng, who has an adventurous spirit and is the cutest elephant that you will ever read about,” says Beatriz, who also praised the book’s creative cover.

Beatriz says the Tale of Tumeleng is a great book for people to think about the importance of bravery and how it is okay for children to be afraid.

“With the strength of family and friends, children can overcome these frustrations,” says Beatriz, adding that the book offers “all great values to pass to children.”
