Cortexxus Inc, a Silicon Valley medical technology company, is Reshaping our Relationship with our Brains.
Following its vision “Empowering People Living with Brain Disorders”, Cortexxus launches its first product – IDEA – Intelligent Data Exchange & Analytics – an EEG (electroencephalography) storage, review, and sharing platform that supports a wide range of EEG Data formats.

Brain Disorders are a growing health problem worldwide, especially given the increase in average life expectancy. It places a tremendous burden on patients, caregivers, and society as a whole. According to the World Health Organization, there are one billion people with diagnosed brain disorders. Cortexxus has been working on a solution that elegantly addresses an unmet need and solves an enormous problem – practical technology for helping with efficient diagnosis and treatment of Brain Disorders.

Cortexxus is launching – IDEA – Intelligent Data Exchange & Analytics: a cloud platform dedicated to electroencephalography (EEG) data storage, sharing, and visualization.

With IDEA, EEG data is uploaded and shared in a few simple steps using a web browser and can then be analyzed by professionals and the analysis shared. The users with whom the EEG is shared receive an email with a link for reviewing the recording. IDEA additionally shows a user-friendly, modern dashboard that summarizes a patient’s sessions and abnormal events. Finally, IDEA includes a potent search engine that allows you to browse and quickly find patients or EEG in your massive database.

“For every patient who has had a prior electroencephalogram (EEG) and is being referred to a neurologist or epilepsy specialist, it is crucial to be able to review the original raw EEG recording as part of a complete evaluation,” says Dr. Babak Razavi, MD, Ph.D., Cortexxus Co-founder and Assistant Professor at Stanford University. “Unfortunately, it is quite difficult, often impossible, to share EEG data across institutions and even sometimes within institutions as there is no standard online or centralized mechanism for doing this.”  Dr. Razavi says. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a clinical test that detects electrical activity in your brain. EEG is an important test for diagnosing and managing epilepsy (i.e., seizure disorder). However, EEG can also help with other brain disorders such as stroke, tumors, concussion, as well as sleep problems.

For patients, Cortexxus IDEA’s main advantage is being able to offer patients complete access to their neurological information. IDEA allows patients to control their data, requesting and receiving their EEG data from any doctor or EEG lab instantly. As a result, patients can dictate where their data goes to help speed up diagnosis and treatment. Then, they can send invitations to any provider of their choice to access their EEG data for more timely neurological evaluation. “The COVID-19 pandemic turned the healthcare system upside down and challenged hospitals, patients, insurers in many different and new ways. Patients have come to play a more active role in their healthcare and decision-making more than ever. Getting access to their data has become crucial,” says  Ana Margarida Alves Cortexxus, CEO and Co-founder. “Patients want to be in control of their medical data and health decisions.”

For physicians, Cortexxus IDEA’s main advantage is its rich, elegant, intuitive user interface, and powerful digital filters, which do not require any programming knowledge. The platform emphasizes a practical and efficient approach to EEG data sharing and analysis, enabling timely diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. This has never been done before. “Cortexxus IDEA will significantly make my daily work efficient by allowing me to instantly gain access to, or share, prior EEG recordings for my patients”, Dr. Babak Razavi says. “When I see a patient for the first time in the clinic, I will already have access to their prior EEGs even before the visit starts and already have a plan in mind. Now, that’s practical and efficient!”

“Cortexxus IDEA is able to store, share, and analyze petabytes, or millions of hours, of raw EEG data,” says David Ribeiro Alves  Cortexxus CTO and Co-founder. “IDEA will become the largest repository of EEG data in the world, enabling the development of new treatments for brain disorders that were not previously possible,” adds David.
